Abstract: Addressing health disparities is an integral aspect of a sustainable future. Populations facing social disadvantages often experience more severe health problems and shorter life expectancy compared to more privileged groups. This presentation will focus on how minority-related stressors, particularly discrimination, affect health behaviors and mental health above and beyond general stressors. Special attention will be given to migration status, a critical but frequently overlooked aspect of inequality in health research. We will explore the direct effects of discrimination on health and its indirect effects through health behavior. Additionally, the role of health behaviors as potential moderators that can either intensify or mitigate harmful consequences of discrimination will be discussed. This talk addresses the complex interplay between minority stress and health behaviors, emphasizing the need for nuanced approaches to address health inequalities and recognizing health behaviors as both pathways to and moderators of health disparities.
